“Freedom of speech” refers to the right to be able to speak or share one’s opinions without being punished for them, whatever they are. Some examples include speech involving political or social commentary. It can also in some cases, include speech that may be controversial or offensive to others. Ex: Our constitution protects freedom of speech, so I can criticize the government without fearing legal persecution. Ex: Many believe that freedom of speech should not protect hate speech or racist language.
