What is “amongst”?

teacher

Native speaker’s answer

Rebecca

"Amongst" is a preposition that means to be "surrounded by", "within", or "between" something. "Amongst" has the same meaning as the word "among", however, "amongst" is more formal and generally less common in American and British English. Ex: She is amongst the top 10% in her class. Ex: We talked about the homework amongst ourselves before asking the teacher for help.
