There’s more than one way to describe rainy weather?!

Do you have a wet season where you live? Where I live, it’s expected to rain all throughout July and August. ☔️ It might be a good idea for me to learn how to describe rainy weather!

Rain can come in many forms, such as a heavy downpour, a light drizzle, or a terrifying thunderstorm.

🌧️ Drizzle

Sometimes raindrops can be like mist! They might seem too small to be called raindrops, but it's not like it isn’t raining at all.

The word you can use is “drizzle”. It means “light rain falling in very fine drops.”

In the movie, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, Miranda tells Andrea to book a flight during a thunderstorm. This is what she says:

”Please, it’s just, I don’t know, drizzling!”

🌫️ Downpour

Recently, where I live, there has been a lot of heavy rain. Another expression you can use instead of heavy rain is “downpour”.

As the word implies, downpour means a heavy rain that pours down.

Wow, did you get caught in that downpour earlier? I was soaked in seconds!

🌂 On and Off

Should I pack my umbrella, or not?!

Last summer I experienced an unexpected downpour on a bright summer’s day, and of course, I didn’t have an umbrella.

In English, rain that comes and goes irregularly is described as "on and off.”

"On and off" can be used when something happens irregularly. When we say "raining on and off," it means that it is raining irregularly.

The forecast says it's going to rain on and off all day.
