if not for可以單獨使用。它不是縮寫，但是if it were not for, were it not for, if it was not for, was it not for, was it not for 。此表達式表示in the absence of ..., ~ would have happened （如果沒有in the absence of ..., ~ would have happened ）。例子： If it wasn't for my father's quick reflexes, we would have gotten into an accident. （ If it weren't for my bad math scores, I would have gotten into a better university.父親的快速反應，那將會是個意外。）例子： If it weren't for my bad math scores, I would have gotten into a better university. （如果我的數學成績還不錯，我本來可以上更好的大學。）
