Why would Muslims restrict statues? What's the religious background?

In religion, statues are usually created for people to worship. For example, Christians worship statues of Jesus. However, this practice is forbidden in Islam as the worshipping of statues is considered to be the worshipping of idols (and Muslims are only supposed to worship Allah). Thus, statues, sculptures, and other similar items are forbidden for the purpose of worship.
