What's the difference between "split up" and "break up"?

There is essentially no difference between the two, as both are informal expressions meaning the ending of relations between two parties. It can be used not just to refer to the ending of romantic relationships, but also business relations. Ex: I broke up with my boyfriend recently. Ex: The company will go through big changes now that the founders have split up.
