The company actually had a couple of other names before, but in the 90s, he wanted to change it to something with an "A" since websites used to be listed alphabetically, which mean a company with an "A" would show up first. So while flipping through the dictionary, he saw the word "Amazon," the name of the largest river on the planet, and thought it would be appropriate for what would be the largest bookstore.
