The origin of the word "login/log in" comes from when people would "log," or enter information, into a book as a kind of record. The "in" part references entering or going into something, like a system, in this case. Ex: Did you log in the expenses for the month in our budget book? Ex: You need to log in to the website before you can purchase anything.
