"Proud" is used to describe people (or creatures, like in this case!) that have a high opinion of themselves or their importance. It means that it's difficult to get them to submit to others/get on your side, due to their loftiness. For example, people like to use this adjective to describe cats. Ex: My cousin is quite proud, so it's difficult to get close with her. Ex: My cat is quite a proud creature. He doesn't give anyone attention.
