Why's it "phenomena" not "phenomenon?"

"Phenomena" is just the plural form of "phenomenon"! It's a rare case in which a plural noun does not end in the "-s." Ex: I have witnessed many interesting phenomena during my time as a scientist. Ex: The author wrote about strange and unknown scientific phenomena in his book.
