It would sound awkward, yes! That's because he's not visibly close to the apartment in this scene. "walk to" works since he may have walked from afar. "Walk into" would imply that he's just about to walk inside, or enter, the apartment. Ex: I'm going to walk to the shops later today. Do you wanna join me? Ex: I didn't realize how busy the cafe was until I walked into it.
