Metaphorically, not referring to "gambling" games, one "gambles" when they take a chance or risk on something or someone, and you're not sure how it's going to turn out. It's a risky action that you hope turns out the way you want. Ex: I took a gamble and booked the plane tickets even though we weren't sure we could go. Ex: I'll gamble on hiring him as my new assistant. We'll see how he does after a month.
