"Dead of night" is a phrase! It usually means midnight or the time when everyone is sleeping - so it seems "dead". It's can also be used quite dramatically. Ex: I woke up in the dead of night and heard a scream. Ex: My plane landed in the dead of night, so I booked into a hotel.
