student asking question

I'm not that familiar with English grammar, but would it change the nuance of the sentence if I omit the word "had" in this context?

Native speaker’s answer

Rebecca

So, in terms of the narrator's point of view when telling the story, the past perfect tense is necessary - subject + had + past participle. However, it would sound fine and mean the same thing if you did omit the word "had". Ex: He found the way out just in time! Ex: Jerry had seen how to make ice cream online and wanted to try it himself.
