Not always! "Diet" can just refer to the food you eat and what it usually consists of. Ex: These days, my diet consists of convenience store food and iced coffee. => habitual eating Ex: I've decided to go on a diet after the holidays. => restricting food or losing weight Ex: Rabbits need to eat a diet of green leaves and carrots, not sweet things like raisins.
