Would it change the context of a sentence if I say "status" instead of "state"?

It wouldn't change it in this context, no! But, it could change it in other contexts. "State" is something in its current condition, whereas "status" is more along the lines of something that can change during a process. Ex: What's the status of the cake? Is it done yet? Ex: I found Jim in a dreadful state. He had been sitting in the rain for a while!
