Does "familiar" has something to do with the word "family?"

Good guess! They are related terms. If "family" refers to people that we are related to in some way (by blood or by marriage), then "familiar" refers to things or people with which we know, have seen/meet/heard of, or are comfortable with. For example, if you find a person familiar, it means that you may have seen or met them before. Ex: Sorry, you're not familiar to me. Have we met before? Ex: I'm not familiar with that road, so I got lost.
