Does the word "call" directly refers to a phone call? Or could it also include other methods like an "e-mail" or "telegram?"

The word "call" does refer directly to a "phone call." I assume in the business of entertainment and TV, it could typical to get a call from someone about getting a role. If you wanted to include other methods, you can say "found out." "Find out," here, would mean to be informed through a form of communication. Ex: Tell me about the time you found out you were in the movie. EX: I got a call from my boss, so I had to leave the restaurant.
