Actually, while "modern" does indicate present days, the modern era spans from about the 14th century or 1750s to now. Before that was the "early modern era," and before that, the middle ages. Ex: The modern age is marked by the innovation of technology, urbanization, and scientific discoveries. Ex: This building is very modern.
