Does "sky" always have to have the definite article "the" before it like here?

Most of the time, yes! That's because there's usually only one specific sky we refer to on Earth. Unless you were talking about skies on other planets or how different the sky looks at different times of the day, then you could use it without the article "the." Ex: Night skies are my favourite skies. I love looking at the stars and the different colours. Ex: The sky is so big and blue!
