To "back down" is a phrasal verb that means to withdraw a claim or assertion or to withdraw from a position or commitment. Sometimes because other people are against it, or it isn't worth following through with. It's often used in the case of fighting, arguing, or going against someone else. Or to withdraw a commitment from something. Ex: You need to learn to back down from a fight. => to not get involved in a fight Ex: I had to back down from helping out with the party since my schedule is pretty full.
