student asking question

Just wondering... Does the word "pardon" a compound word? Like "dunno (don't know)" or "lemme (let me)"? I wondered because it often sounds like "part on", even though they have completely different meanings!

No, "pardon" is not a combined word or short form of another word. It is derived from the Medieval Latin word "perdonare" (and French verb "pardoner"), which means to "forgive for offense or sin." You will note that many English words are loan verbs that have Latin or French origins, so in a way they may be considered to have compound origins, but cannot be considered modern-day portmanteaus, slang expressions, or shortened words. Additionally, "dunno" and "lemme" are considered to be informal slang forms and arose from the rushed, imprecise pronunciations of common words.
