Although "date" is generally used in the romantic sense, it can be used to refer to any social appointment or engagement, such as hanging out with friends or family. "Dating," however, is a label that can only be used by couples. It's used to describe the romantic relationship between a couple. Ex: My boyfriend and I are not dating anymore. We broke up recently. Ex: I have a brunch date with my best friends tomorrow.
