What's the difference between "check" and "check out"?

These are fairly similar in meaning. "Check out" means to look at or to examine something for the first time. "Check" means to examine something to determine its quality, accuracy, etc. Ex: Hey, check this out! Ex: Could you please check on the soup? Ex: I'm planning to go and check out a new car. Ex: I need to check on him later.
