Why's it "has given us" instead of "gave us?"

Here, they use the present perfect "have given us" instead of the past simple "gave us" since it's something that finished in the past but is still relevant and in use now. Ex: They have given us extra time for our project. I'll finish it by Monday! = They gave us extra time for our project, so I finished it by Monday. Ex: She has given me a gift for Christmas. => not opened yet, so it's still relevant. = She gave me a gift for Christmas.
