Is "from the beginning of the time" a common phrase? It seems a little awkward for me.

It's not all that common. It's a very niche phrase that would be mostly used in stories. You will also hear little differences in this phrase. For example, "Since the beginning of time" is a common one used in stories. Ex: Since the beginning of time, creatures have roamed freely on this earth. Ex: From the beginning of time, humans have been hunter-gatherers.
