What's the main difference between "buddy" and "friend"?

"Buddy" is a bit more of a slang term, and gives off a feeling of closeness that "friend" does not. However, note that it's more often used amongst children and men. Ex: Honey, I'm going out with my work buddies tonight for some beers. Ex: Do you have any buddies at your kindergarten?
