"It's supposed to" means "it's meant/intended to." Basically, "make our food taste the way it's supposed to" means "make our food taste the way it's meant/intended to." The speaker is stating here that people have come up with many techniques to make food artificially look and taste the way it should. Ex: This machine doesn't work the way it's supposed to. Is it broken? Ex: The bike is not supposed to make that noise. I think the chain is broken.
