"Took root" means to start to become fixed or established. It comes from when a plant grows and becomes fixed where it is because of its roots being nourished and growing. Ex: My orange tree sapling took root pretty fast. Ex: Once Sam suggested it, the idea started to take root in their minds. Ex: If the corporation takes root here, it'll be hard for local businesses to grow.
