"Take over" is a phrasal verb meaning to assume control of something. Here it refers to assuming control of something instead of someone or something. It can be used in a variety of situations. One can "take over" a simple task such as cooking, or controlling a device, or it can be used in relation to war and other things! Ex: The neighboring country took over without any warning. Ex: Can you take over cooking while I help Jim with this problem?
