Would it sound awkward if I say "useless" instead of "no use" in this context?

No, not at all! "No use" and "useless" mean the same thing and can be used interchangeably in this context. Ex: Even though I studied all night, it was no use. I failed the exam. Ex: This toy is broken. It's useless; why don't you throw it away?
