Although scholars cannot trace the exact reason why the eating of pork is banned in Islam, it has been a religious tenet for thousands of years. It is banned in the Qu'ran and many Muslims understand the reason to be that pigs are unclean, as they eat their own feces. Additionally, pork consumption is forbidden in Judaism and some Christian denominations.
