To "collect one's thoughts" means to become mentally composed- to become calm and organized in one's thinking to prepare for something. You can use it after you've been distressed and need to think about something or what to do next. You can also "collect your thoughts" in preparation for a speech, conversation, or decision so as to have clarity when doing those things. A sort of internal processing of thoughts and feelings. Ex: I'll continue this conversation after I've collected my thoughts. Ex: Let me just collect my thoughts. Alright. Let's get the next train. Ex: After Rosie had calmed down and collected her thoughts, she could tell the cops what the robber looked like.
