"Back and forth" means alternating, to and fro, backwards and forwards, or side to side. In essence, it describes an action or movement that shifts from one direction to the opposite, and then back again. It can be used to describe a physical action, or can be meant in the metaphorical sense. Ex: The politicians answered questions back and forth during the debate. Ex: In order to move from my old apartment into my new place, I went back and forth several times to move all my stuff.
