Is there a difference between "coast" and "shore?"

"Shore" and "coast" are pretty similar in meaning. They both refer to land which borders a large body of water (like a sea, ocean, lake, or large river). Shores tend to be smaller strips of land, whereas coasts are larger. For example, the land which borders a long strip of land like California or Australia would be called a coast, and the land along a small island would be a shore. Ex: We love walking along the shore during sunset. Ex: Let's drive down the coast of California.
