What does the "small talk" mean? A gossip, perhaps?

Small talk is more similar to casual, polite conversation you might have with someone if you are unfamiliar with them or before a serious conversation. Small talk often consists of asking how one is doing, what the weather is like, or if their families are doing well. Ex: I hate making small talk. It makes me nervous. Ex: He's great at networking because he's a pro at making small talk.
