What's the main difference between "translation" and "interpretation"? Or are they always interchangeable?

They are not always interchangeable! They can both mean the same thing, like communicating from one language into another. However, one can "interpret" what someone says to mean something else. Meaning can be lost or added, and interpretation can become metaphorical. Whereas "translation", has the goal of communicating something directly. Ex: I interpreted your artwork as a way of challenging what is considered "normal"! What did you interpret it as? Ex: Jen went to Spain and tried to speak Spanish. But, a lot of what she said got lost in translation since she didn't know the language very well.
