While "kid" can be endearing, "son" is a little more endearing in this context, as if Mr. Krabs is a father figure for SpongeBob. But otherwise, "kid" would make a good replacement here for "son." Ex: Well done on winning the quiz, kid. = Well done on winning the quiz, son. Ex: Thanks, kid. Your support means a lot. = Thanks, son. Your support means a lot. Ex: Hey, kid! Get out the road. => a random kid
