When can I use "under" like this? I thought "under" indicates a placement of something.

Under can indicate the placement of something! But here, it means to believe something, often wrongly. Ex: She's under the impression that I know how to dance, but I don't know how to. Ex: I'm under the belief that you are good at cooking, am I wrong?
