What does "waif" mean?
Answer from a Native speaker

Rebecca
A "waif" refers to someone, especially a child, who is homeless, abandoned or stray. The word "waif" is not frequently used today, and "abandoned" or "homeless" are more common to use. Ex: The young waif was sitting on the street. Ex: They take in waifs and give them homes.
