"Surge" means a powerful forward movement, or yes, an "increase" of something in a brief time! It can also be a powerful emotion or feeling. Ex: There was a power surge that caused the lights to go out. Ex: They'll be a surge in jacket sales when the first snow fall happens. => sudden increase Ex: The flooding was caused by tidal surges. Ex: I felt a surge of anger arise when I heard what he had done.
