Is "in" here really necessary in this sentence?

This is a good question! It is not considered standard to use "in" before "between." The use of "in" here is superfluous and thus the sentence should be "blocks are just the unnamed spaces between streets." Ex: I built a fence between my yard and my neighbor's yard. Ex: Between my sister and brother, I prefer my sister.
