Kiwi asks…

Is there any difference in meaning between "take in", "cheat" and "fake"?

Answer from a Native speaker

teacher

Rebecca

"Cheat" and "take in" are really similar in meaning. They are synonyms for "fool" or "deceive." Ex: He cheated his friend out of ten thousand dollars. Ex: He got taken in by a scam and lost a lot of money. Meanwhile, to "fake" means to forge or counterfeit something. So, it's different from the first two terms. Ex: She faked her mother's signature on the check. Ex: The company faked a famous brand's products.
