Is it common to not put "a" in front of "female"?
"Female" is used as an adjective here rather than a noun, therefore it is correct to not put "a" in front of it. "Female" does not need an "a" when it is used as an adjective. Examples of "female" used as an adjective: Ex: A female sounding voice answered the phone. Ex: She wanted her roommate to be female.
