Recuerda que "the" se utiliza para hacer referencia a sustantivos reales a cosas específicas. En este caso, "the real thing" es algo auténtico, amor de verdad. Es algo concreto, por eso se utiliza "the". "A real thing" no funcionaría en este contexto, porque no hace referencia a algo concreto, sino a algo más general. Ej: "This is the house I grew up in." (Esta es la casa en la que crecí.) Ej: "I'm going to eat an apple." (Me voy a comer una manzana.)
