Does the narrator call school an "outside world", because the students are exposed to various situations?

The term "the outside world" is used to describe things that are common in normal life but are not part of your everyday experience. So what the narrator is trying to say, is that school is our only experience outside of our home, which is our everyday life. Whereas when we become adults "the outside world" is a much larger place. In adulthood "the outside world" is work, friends, travel, social activities, etc. Ex: Without the internet I would have no knowledge of the outside world in my small town. Ex: After 20 years in prison, he had no idea about the outside world. Ex: I want to travel as much as possible and experience the outside world.
