You can listen for the difference between "when" and "while" by listening to how each word ends. "When" ends in an "n" sound, which is created by putting most of your tongue at the roof of your mouth. "While" ends in an "l" sound, which is created by putting the tip of your tongue at the roof of your mouth and behind your front teeth, and curving your tongue towards your teeth. An "n" sound does not appear in the word "while", and an "l" sound does not appear in the word "when", so you can distinguish between these words by identifying these sounds.
