Does "hope" mean the same as "want"?

The word "hope" is similar to "want", however they have some differences. To "hope" for something means that you wish for something to occur in the future and you are possibly working toward that goal. To "want" something simply means that you desire it, and it can be used more as a demand. Ex: I hope you will finish your homework. Ex: I want you to finish your homework. Looking at the examples above, you can see that "want" sounds a little more demanding than "hope". "Hope" expresses that the speaker has a desire for the person to complete their homework, but that person can choose whether or not they do it. "Want" in the second example is a demand and gives the person no choice.
