通常在口語對話中，不太會提到切確的數字。比方說：half a million（50萬）、half a billion（5億），更不會提到千以下的數字。Million（百萬）算是常見的計算單位，很少會用「five hundred thousand」，其他計量單位也是相同的用法：half a kilogram（半公斤）、half a cup（半杯），在對話時提到「half a cup」會比「two hundred and fifty milliliters」讓人更容易理解。 例：You only need half a cup of water and a cup of pancake mix to make pancakes. （你只需半杯水與一杯煎餅粉就能做煎餅了。） 例：There are half a million people with the condition, but they might know it. （約有50萬人有這樣的狀況，他們也了解此狀況。）
