What does "lot" refer to in this context? I don't think it's about quantity.

Good guess! "Lot in life" is an expression meaning one's general circumstances or situation in life. It's quite often used in a negative context. If someone says "that's just our/my lot in life," it means something similar to "that's just our luck/fate in life." Ex: She was under a lot of debt and worked a dead-end job. She was very unhappy with her lot in life. Ex: I will never be satisfied with my lot in life. I will work hard to improve it if I'm unhappy.
